SCHELTOPUSIK (EUROPEAN GLASS LIZARD)
|
| | Pseudopus apodus
| The Scheltopusik or European Glass Lizard has its name because of its escape mechanism, when threatened it may drop its tail which then splits into a number of pieces, not dissimilar in appearance to broken glass.
A legless lizard, the remnants of the hind limbs can still be seen. Growing up to around 100cm (40 in) in length, they are a carnivorous lizard with a very impressive life-span, lasting over 50 years in captivity.
